Features of Backstop Clutch FRHD800


Complete Freewheels FRHD Backstop Clutch with lever arm are sealed sprag freewheels with ball bearings. 

They are supplied oil-filled and ready for installation. The freewheels are arranged on through shafts or shaft ends


The freewheels FRHD are used as:
➧ Backstops
for low-speed applications. They are designed for use in inclined conveyor-belt systems, elevators and pumps. Taconite seals protect the backstops when conditions are dirty and dusty. Nominal torques up to 900 000 lb-ft. Bores up to 21 inch


Working Principle and Key Components of FRHD Backstop Clutch 

Roller freewheels Backstop Clutch feature roller ramps on either the inner or outer ring, while the opposite ring is equipped with a cylindrical track. Positioned between the rings, the individually spring-loaded rollers enable the freewheel to securely lock without any slipping . 


In the configuration depicted , the outer ring can rotate freely in a clockwise direction during freewheeling operation under the following conditions:

  • The inner ring is stationary,

  • The inner ring is turning counterclockwise, or

  • The inner ring is turning clockwise at a slower rate than the outer ring.


If the outer ring, with a stationary inner ring, is turned in the opposite direction, the clamping mechanism engages. The rollers clamp securely between the tracks without slipping, allowing for the transmission of high torque in this direction of rotation during driving operation.


This setup also facilitates freewheeling operation when the inner ring is turning counterclockwise and driving operation when turning clockwise, providing versatile functionality.


The fundamental working principle of a one-way backstop clutch involves several key components:


  1. Inner Race: The inner race is a cylindrical or annular component that is securely attached to a shaft or rotating element.


  2. Outer Race: The outer race is another cylindrical or annular component that remains stationary or is attached to a stationary part of the machine.


  3. Roller or Sprag: Between the inner and outer races are a series of roller or sprags. These elements are critical to the clutch's operation.

Mounting of FRHD Backstop Clutch 

The torque arm prevents backdriving torque and should not be securely clamped into position. Instead, it must have a play of 0.5 inches in both the axial and radial directions.

Conveyor Systems


FXM Overrunning clutches are used in conveyor systems to prevent backward motion when the conveyor needs to stop suddenly. This enhances safety and prevents product damage. It is widely used on conveyor system of Grain Silo Equipment.


Bucket Elevator


Backstop clutches are employed in the freewheel mechanism. Backstop to Prevent Reversal of Inclined Conveyor and Vertical Bucket Elevators .


With the drive at one end of the drive pulley shaft, the backstop should be located at the opposite end, away from the speed reducer and coupling.


Industrial Mining Equipment


Various industrial equipment, such as packaging machines, printing presses, and textile machinery, use one-way backstop clutches to prevent reverse rotation and safeguard against unintended backdriving.


Operating Instructions for FRHD Backstop Clutch 

 Lubrication 


◆ #2 Lithium-Based Grease is widely used for the cam clutch lubrication. Please contact Suma engineer if special grease are needed .


◆ Grease with Plumbum or Graphit are strictly forbidden.


◆ Lubrication grease was added before clutch leave factory, user can install the clutch directly. If clutch leave factory over 1 year or the grease has gone bad , need to clean clutch first then add specified amount grease to the clutch .


◆ Change grease every 3-6 months based on user’s operating frequency. Add grease to clutch every one month .


Proper operation and maintenance are crucial for ensuring the longevity and performance of one-way backstop clutches. Here are some operating instructions:


Inspection and Maintenance


  1. Periodically inspect the clutch for signs of wear, damage, or contamination.


  2. Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule to replace or repair worn or damaged components.


Overloading

  1. Avoid subjecting the clutch to torque loads beyond its specified capacity, as this can lead to damage or failure.


  2. Ensure that the clutch is appropriately sized for the intended application to prevent overloading.
